"SiliconSystems
and Active Voice Collaborate to Drive Performance,
Reliability and Flexibility in Voice Messaging Systems"
As technologies continue to evolve in the telecommunications
industry, so do the expectations of telecommunications
customers. The need for "always on" 24/7
service requires technology that provides high reliability
and high performance over many years. While solid-state
storage meets these needs well, advanced solid-state
storage from SiliconSystems goes well beyond meeting
them.
Challenge: A search for the most advanced,
flexible storage technology partner
Active Voice, LLC, a subsidiary of NEC Unified Solutions,
Inc., is a global provider of voice messaging, unified
communications and speech-activated solutions, powering
the communications infrastructure of businesses
worldwide. The Seattle-based company has offices
in the United States, Australia, and the Netherlands.
Over 185,000 Active Voice systems have been installed
in more than 60 countries.

Challenge
– Committed to maintaining a
leading market position worldwide, Active Voice
required a more advanced storage technology
solution with high availability and low-power
consumption to replace the rotating hard drive
in its 24/7, "always-on" embedded
unified messaging systems. Solution
– SiliconSystems’ SiliconDrive
with integrated PowerArmor technology proved
to be an optimal solution for breakthrough storage
technology that delivered the high performance,
high reliability, product longevity, and format
flexibility Active Voice was seeking.
Benefits – Active Voice
realized a lower cost of ownership by offering
a more robust and reliable low-power voice messaging
system with an extended multi-year product lifecycle
that virtually eliminates storage system failures.

Active Voice is committed
to remaining an industry leader by continually
improving its products’ performance, longevity
and flexibility for a variety of operating environments.
As Active Voice began evaluating solid-state
media as a potential replacement for its rotating
drives, it wanted to incorporate the most currently
available advanced storage technology into its
embedded messaging applications.
For Active Voice, extending the life of its
existing embedded product lines was a priority,
which was a key reason the company chose solid-state
technology. Market demands required more sophisticated
products that offered higher reliability along
with a broader range of storage capacities and
format choices. Additional requirements included
the ability to repair, service and replace parts
or add-on storage as customer needs changed.
Solution: Additional
peace-of-mind with SiliconSystems’ SiliconDrive
technology – engineered to overcome virtually
all storage system concerns
After careful review of a variety of solid-state
technologies and manufacturers, Active Voice
ultimately selected SiliconDrive from SiliconSystems
based on its superior storage technology. Significant
to its choice of technology partner was SiliconSystems’
patented, integrated PowerArmor technology that
eliminates drive corruption and unscheduled
downtime in the event of any power disturbance,
thereby giving Active Voice additional peace
of mind. The industry-leading 6-Bit ECC in SiliconDrive
was another significant factor in Active Voice’s
selection, since it helped extend the product
life for its customers.
"We wanted to make an investment into a
single vendor that could meet our technical
and business requirements," said Edward
Burceag, Director of Linux Product Engineering,
Active Voice. "We found the SiliconSystems
team to be diligent and supportive in our technical
evaluation and during our business discussions.
The SiliconDrive technology proved to be solid
and very reliable which facilitated a very smooth
implementation."
Active Voice tested SiliconDrive against several
competitors and found it was ideally suited
for its embedded unified messaging portfolio.
In addition, SiliconDrive technology gave Active
Voice the long deployment cycle that it required,
resulting in a lower total cost of ownership.
"By using SiliconSystems technology, we
have investment protection for a minimum of
four years before having to qualify a new drive,
which is a much longer cycle than other flash
media products on market today," noted
Burceag.
Benefit: A more robust
and low-power voice mail system that offers
enhanced service for customers
Since incorporating SiliconDrive into its embedded
unified messaging applications, Active Voice
offers customers a complete messaging solution
with high availability data storage they can
depend on, and the ability to easily upgrade
their system as needed. In addition, the Silicon
Systems patented wear leveling technology maximized
the system longevity Active Voice had hoped
to offer.
"Embracing the very latest in solid-state
storage technology ultimately helps us provide
better service to our customers," said
Burceag. "We can now provide more robust,
reliable messaging solutions that offer our
customers a greater selection of media than
ever before."
